Here are the basic questions you need to ask:
Ask if the Discount Rate is locked in? Find
out how often they can increase their discount rate and by how much.
Be sure you get a locked in guarantee to give you peace of mind.
Ask about the Non-Qualified Rate.This
is a fee charged in addition to the quoted discount
rate and occurs when there are additional perk fees,
like special corporate cards that offer frequent flyer
miles. Another is having to key in a card for processing,
because there is additional risk when a card is not
swiped. Everyone has to charge
this fee but some charge twice as much as necessary
to make up for that really low (sometimes below cost)
discount rate they quote you.
Ask if there is an annual fee.
Many will charge anywhere from $49.00 to $95.00 as an
annual fee to be paid on the anniversary of your processing
start date or even on a bi-annual or quarterly basis.
In most cases they charge this fee to make up the difference
when offering a low statement or transaction fee.
Beware of the NO charge for equipment. If
they say they are giving the equipment to you for free, then they will
be making up for it in charges and fees. Feel free to ask them how they
make their money, ask about these additional fees.
